Special Olympics boosts the self-confidence and puts sports within reach of everyone with an intellectual disability. Special Olympics (SO) was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. SO organizes sports events and competitions for athletes with an intellectual disability (as opposed to the Paralympics, which organizes competitions for people with a physical disability). SO has the official support of the IOC.
Today, Special Olympics is an international organization, active in 178 countries.
The Special Olympics European Summer Games are held every four years, in a different European city each time. Antwerp was selected to host the 2014 European Summer Games (SO2014), which were held under the banner ‘Games of the Heart’. The Olympics took place from 9 to 20 September.
